Outpatient Joint Replacement and Achieving The Triple Aim

Patient outcomes demonstrate that outpatient joint replacement (OJR) provides an alternative site of care for patients suffering from chronic osteoarthritis. With the Triple Aim Objectives of healthcare reform firmly planted at the forefront of the national debate, OJR has been less costly than joint replacement performed in an inpatient hospital setting for our practice. By streamlining care in the outpatient setting, and contracting with local insurance providers with a bundled offering, Excelsior Orthopaedics decreased the top line reimbursement for total joints from approximately $38,000 to $26,000.

On September 24, ASCA formally responded to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 2019 proposed payment rule for ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs). Of note, ASCA thanked CMS for addressing a number of long-requested ASCA priorities, including proposing to align update factors and moving ASCs to the hospital market basket that is used to update HOPD payments. On Tuesday, September 18th the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP) Committee held the fourth in a series of five hearings intended to examine the drivers of high U.S. healthcare costs. The hearing, entitled Reducing Health Care Costs: Examining How Transparency Can Lower Spending and Empower Patients, was presided over by Chairman Lamar Alexander, the ranking senator from the state of Tennessee.

HHS Launching Database of Patient Safety Culture at Ambulatory Surgical Centers

The Office of Management and Budget gave the OK for HHS to launch the Ambulatory Surgery Center Survey on Patient Safety Culture Database. The decision comes as ambulatory surgery centers are treating more patients—a trend being pushed by payers, including Medicare, that want to move care away from more expensive inpatient settings.

MGH Study Finds Major Increase in U.S. Healthcare Data Breaches

Since 2010, the total number of healthcare data breaches has increased steadily every year — except in 2015 — from 199 in 2010 to 344 in 2017, according to an analysis of U.S. health care data conducted by two Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) physicians. While 70 percent of all breaches took place at health care providers, breaches involving health plans accounted for 63 percent of all breached records.

Tower Health Forms Partnership to Expand Access to Outpatient Surgery Centers

West Reading's Tower Health has announced a partnership with the nation's largest manager of ambulatory surgical centers to expand access to care for patients in its market area. Through the joint venture with United Surgical Partners International of Texas, Tower plans to both acquire and develop ambulatory surgery centers in Southeastern Pennsylvania with a goal of improving access for patients to high-quality, high-value surgical procedures.

BridgeHealth Expands Its National Panel of Surgical Centers

BridgeHealth, the leading national provider for surgical centers of excellence and value-based care, announced today it has added five surgical centers to its national provider panel. Fresno Surgical Hospital and Summit Surgical Center, both in Fresno, California, and OrthoAtlanta (two centers) and Polaris Spine and Neurosurgery Center serving the greater Atlanta area are now partnered with BridgeHealth.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has announced collaboration with The Joint Commission to incorporate AAOS clinical expertise into standards development and performance measurement requirements for Total Hip and Knee Replacement (THKR) Certification. The Joint Commission established the voluntary advanced certification in 2016 for accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care.
