The two organizations discussed the reasons why development and implementation of certified systems has been slow in the ASC space as well as some possible solutions to the problem. Report: HCA, PE Giant Eyeing Envision

Hospital titan HCA Healthcare reportedly has partnered with one of the biggest names in private equity to make a buyout bid for Envision Healthcare, the company home to surgery center operator AmSurg and physician services giant EmCare. Reuters wrote last Friday that HCA executives are teaming up with KKR & Co.—the former Kohlberg Kravis Roberts—to take over Envision and then split the company back into its two divisions, with HCA keeping the surgery centers.

Site Launched to Let Mass. Residents Compare Health Care Costs, Quality

Massachusetts residents have a new tool to help them make health care decisions with the launch Wednesday of an online transparency website that includes procedure pricing comparisons, provider quality metrics and other resources. The Center for Health Information and Analysis' new CompareCare site, located at MassCompareCare.gov, uses claims data to show the full amount medical providers were paid, by both the insurer and the patient, for nearly 300 procedures including X-rays, MRIs, office visits, and blood tests.

NueHealth Joint Venture Acquires Blue Bell, PA Ambulatory Surgery Center

NueHealth, in partnership with Rothman Institute, Jefferson Health, and 14 individual multi-specialty physicians, has acquired the Blue Bell Surgery Center in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. The new Jefferson Surgery Center -Blue Bell is expected to open in Q3 2018.

CMS Unveils Enhanced 'Drug Dashboards' to Increase Transparency on Drug Prices

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a redesigned version of the Drug Spending Dashboards. For the first time, the dashboards include year-over-year information on drug pricing and highlight which manufactures have been increasing their prices.

Maryland's Plan to Control Health Costs Gets Federal Approval

The federal government has approved a plan Maryland has been testing for the past four years to control health costs by shifting more care out of hospitals and better coordinating care with doctors, nursing homes and community groups, state officials announced Monday. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been closely watching the state’s pilot program, first implemented in 2014, as a possible model for other states.

F.D.A. Names and Shames Drug Makers to Encourage Generic Competition

Pharmaceutical companies that spend billions of dollars to develop new drugs do not want competitors to profit from inexpensive generic copies of blockbuster medicines. To avoid rivals, they fight for patent extensions, seek new uses for old products and, sometimes, prevent generic drug companies from obtaining samples.

Governor Mapp Praises Plans to Open Surgical Center on St. Croix

Governor Kenneth E. Mapp offered his congratulations Wednesday to the physicians behind Liberty Medical Development, which recently announced that it has successfully secured financing for a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical center at Estate Diamond on St. Croix. The surgical center will offer operating and surgical procedure rooms with clinic offices for several local medical practices.

Waystar Releases Second Annual Patient Payment Check-Up Survey

Waystar, the combination of Navicure and ZirMed revenue cycle technologies, today announced findings from its second annual Patient Payment Check-Up Survey, conducted by HIMSS Analytics. This year’s survey, fielded in January 2018, polled over 1,000 patients that have visited a medical provider in the last 12 months, along with almost 900 financial executives from leading hospitals, health systems and other outpatient facilities.
