CMS Pushes HIPAA 5010 Enforcement Deadline Back Again

March 15, 2012

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will delay implementing the requirement that health care providers begin adhering to Version 5010 transaction standards until June 30, according to Modern Healthcare.

The agency had previously announced that, although it was not changing the original January 1 deadline for implementation, it would not take enforcement action until March 31.

Today, CMS’s Office of E-Health Standards and Services said noncompliant medical practices, hospitals and other healthcare entities will not be at risk of penalties until after June 30.

In February, the MGMA-ACMPE (formerly called the Medical Group Management Association) requested more time, citing complaints from physicians that the conversion was resulting in "significant delays" in claims payment.
