Recently, the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) revised its Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Surveillance definitions and reporting instructions. These SSI definitions and instructions were designed primarily with acute care facilities in mind; however, they are also used by outpatient settings including ASCs that are located in states that mandate SSI reporting to NHSN (Colorado, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Texas).
The main purpose of the attached document is to give guidance to ASCs that are tracking SSI but do not have mandatory state NHSN SSI surveillance reporting. These ASCs are advised to follow the criteria listed in the attached document but not to report the data to NHSN at this time. The data can be used for internal benchmarking, trending and reporting.
