Even in today’s divisive political environment, there’s at least one important area of consensus among policymakers: the threat posed by rising health care costs to both our national economy and the federal and state governments’ balance sheets. This concern is particularly acute in the Medicare program, where costs are expected to rise dramatically as new treatments are developed and a generation of Baby Boomers enters retirement.
