Medicare Reduces Lithotripsy Payment Rate

May 3, 2012

Due to an error, the Medicare payment rate for CPT 50590 (fragmenting of kidney stone) released in November 2011 was incorrect. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has corrected the mistake resulting in a 20% reduction in its payment for the procedure. ASCA reached out to CMS and has learned that Medicare contractors are not supposed to automatically reprocess previously paid claims. If your contractor does, please contact Jonathan Beal at jbeal@ascassociation.org and let him know.

For your reference, the incorrect and corrected rate for CPT 50590 follows. Please note that the rate provided is the national rate and, thus, does not reflect local wage adjustments. ASCA members can obtain more information on their wage index and Medicare’s other payment rates by accessing the Medicare rate calculator on ASCA’s web site.
