Noncompliance can have significant consequences, including patient complaints, government audits and monetary sanctions. Description: On September 25, 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a proposed rule, “Management Standards for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals,” that involves sweeping changes to the hazardous waste regulations that apply to pharmaceutical waste. A final rule is expected by 2017. In addition, on September 9, 2014, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) published its Final Rule for Disposal of Controlled Substances with new requirements for the management of outdated drugs and “wastage.” Examine the policies and procedures your ASC needs to have in place to comply with both the EPA and DEA regulations. Make sure your ASC is prepared to respond to increasing scrutiny from EPA and state environmental protection authorities working to enforce the new requirements.

Description: Peer review is the process by which ASCs evaluate physicians’ competency and proficiency and the quality of care they provide. It is mandated by Medicare and all accrediting agencies as a critical function of ASC operations and services, with the ASC’s Governing Board having full responsibility and accountability, yet surveyors frequently cite this process as an area of deficiency. Join this session, presented by a retired Medicare surveyor, to focus on the necessary components that all ASCs should address to build and implement an evidence-based, objective, effective and meaningful peer review program. Examples of process failures that have led to citations for regulatory noncompliance will be cited.
